Earth Hour: What Climate Positive Businesses Are Doing

Updated:
March 2022

What do the experts think...

Earth Hour is fast approaching with thousands of people and businesses set to mark the occasion this Saturday the 26th of March.

To learn more about Earth Hour and how businesses can get involved, check out our previous article here.

To provide a source of inspiration for other climate-conscious businesses, we reached out to a couple of our Climate Positive customers to find out how they are making the most of this significant annual sustainability event.

Here’s what sustainable vitamins brand, Vitable and EV financing company, Vyro are up to!

Vitable

Vitable's vitamin sachets (right) are all home compostable, and they recently launched a refillable replacement for their cardboard box packaging (left)!

How is your team taking part in Earth Hour 2022?

In collaboration with AEONA, our office will turn the lights off between 8:30 pm and 10:30pm on the 26th of March in support of Earth Hour and what it stands for. We don't believe the hour is enough so we would love to go above and beyond! Every employee will also be individually participating in Earth Hour in their own homes.

Finally, Vitable will be spreading the message of Earth Hour across our organic social channels in the lead up to the Earth Hour event to help promote the cause and encourage other businesses and individuals to participate as well.

What are some things your business already does (other than offset your footprint with trace) to reduce your environmental impact and leave a positive trace?

At Vitable, our mission is to shake up the throwaway culture of everyday health and wellness products and help everyone feel better with sustainable health solutions.

Our daily vitamin packaging is made from sustainably sourced, plant-based cellulose produced from sustainably harvested Eucalyptus trees which are certified to be GMO-free. Our sachets break down naturally and return nutrients back into the soil under home-composting conditions without releasing toxins.

Most recently (March 2022), we have upgraded our sustainability experience with new innovative packaging! Vitable has replaced their monthly cardboard vitamin pack container with a solid, refillable dispenser to minimise unnecessary waste. Australia generated a whopping 75.8 million tonnes of waste in 2018-19 alone. Only 9.4% of plastic was successfully recycled, and 20.5 million tonnes of waste was sent directly to landfills.* All customers will receive a refillable dispenser with their first order and all following orders will come as refills packed in FSC-certified and recyclable cardboard materials.

Everything from our packaging to the shipping containers and packaging tape we use to deliver our products uses sustainable materials (all FSC approved), but the job isn't done, we will constantly look out for different ways to be even MORE sustainable.

Vyro

Vyro is helping remove the barriers for Australians to purchase an electric vehicle.

How is your team taking part in Earth Hour 2022?

We have a number of plans in the calendar at Vyro for this year’s Earth Hour.

We’re all going to be:

  1. Switching all of our light bulbs over to energy-saving light bulbs and ensuring that we’re powering our homes with carbon-neutral energy providers.
  2. Organising a virtual team movie night to watch ‘Our Planet: Our Business’.
  3. Planning a hike or spending more time outdoors on the day.
  4. Starting a composting bin.
  5. Making a personal resolution: Committing to reducing our carbon footprint as individuals.

What are some things your business already does (other than offset your footprint with trace) to reduce your environmental impact and leave a positive trace?

Our whole mission at Vyro is to reduce Australia’s carbon emissions caused by tailpipe emissions by increasing the adoption of zero-emission vehicles. We want to make the biggest positive impact that we can. Other than offsetting our business’ carbon footprint with trace, we also are planting an extra 10 trees for every car sold through the platform and actively ensure that everything we do is as carbon friendly as possibly.

What does your company plan to do when you “switch the lights back on”? In other words - what are some upcoming plans you have for making your business more environmentally sustainable in the near future?

As individuals, our team is going to ensure they’re doing as much as possible to reduce their carbon footprints. As a business, we’ll be adding all of our sustainable partners to our platform. So, our customers will be able to not only easily switch to a zero-emission vehicle, they’ll also be able to install a home charger, change over to a carbon-neutral energy provider, buy pay-as-you-drive insurance, and share their car with others. This will help more Australians make the switch from their fuel-powered car.
