If you're reading this I am sure we don't need to convince you that the climate crisis is happening. It is important we all, individuals & businesses, do what we can to reduce our impact on the earth.
Offsetting is a simple & effective way to have an immediate impact on the planet. By measuring your footprint you can understand where your most carbon intensive processes are and make a plan to reduce them.
And your customers expect it! 88% of consumers want brands to help them be environmentally friendly! ‘Sustainable’ consumer products grew 5x faster than conventional products in the last 5 years.
A carbon offset (or carbon credit) is generated from a project that prevents, reduces or removes greenhouse gas emissions from being released into the atmosphere to compensate for emissions occurring elsewhere (i.e. within your business or supply chain). For example, wind turbines to replace fossil fuels, water boreholes to avoid burning wood to create clean water, geothermal energy, tree planting and biodiversity restoration.
Being a climate positive brand means you have done what you can to minimise any negative environmental impact of doing business and chosen to offset the unavoidable emissions. We use the term 'climate positive' rather than 'carbon neutral' for two reasons:'Carbon neutral' is often used in conjunction with government certification and we don't want to get mixed up with that - we help brands that can't afford to invest in carbon neutral certification by making it easy to estimate and offset your emissions. It’s better to do something than nothing!!We prefer to slightly overestimate your emissions to ensure you have offset more than your footprint, which means you have a net positive (rather than net zero) impact
We provide a certificate to show the amount of CO2 you have offset with us. Government certification requires companies to hire an independent consultant to complete a comprehensive analysis of your operations and supply chain emissions. This is time and cost intensive and often a barrier for many companies to take action. That’s why we created trace. We use benchmarks, publicly available data and intuitive assumptions to estimate the emissions of your product, staff and freight. Want to know more? For each tonne of carbon dioxide you offset, we buy a carbon credit. The price of credits vary depending on the project, so we work hard to handpick the most efficient and effective projects that reduce CO2 pollution. We have created our own criteria to choose projects: external certification, age of the credit, location of the project, technology adopted, contribution to UN SDGs. For more information, visit our projects page.
We publish certificates each month of how many tonnes of CO2 (‘carbon credits’) have been prevented from going into the atmosphere or removed from it. The standards of these projects are externally verified and certified. In terms of trees planted, you can see how many we buy on our tree planting partner’s site. Our partners are regularly audited by third parties.
Our carbon emissions model is based on the GHG protocol guidelines and uses emissions factors and benchmark data from public sources. We believe in the 80:20 rule - 80% accuracy comes from 20% of the effort, which allows us to analyse your emissions and provide a quote in less than 48 hours and at zero cost.
The scope activities that we measure varies by client and can include
- Materials and manufacturing
- Freight and logistics
- Packaging
- Customer deliveries
- Building energy usage
- Staff (remote work, commuting and travel)
